Apple Intelligence and Siri: How AI Is Changing the Assistant

Apple launched Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, introducing its first generative AI platform under the tagline “AI for the rest of us.” The service brings AI-powered writing support, image creation, and a smarter Siri to millions of devices.
Key tools include summarization, composition, and proofreading, as well as Genmoji and Image Playground for customized visuals. Siri has been reengineered with cross-app integration and onscreen awareness, though its next major upgrade will not arrive until 2026. New features—Visual Intelligence and Live Translation—are planned for iOS 26.
The rollout began in October 2024 with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, initially in U.S. English. Expanded language availability is coming in 2025. Compatible hardware includes iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, and M1-powered Macs and iPads.
Apple combines privacy and performance through on-device AI models, while offloading advanced tasks to Private Cloud Compute servers.
Partnership with OpenAI adds ChatGPT support across Siri and Writing Tools, while Apple is also exploring integration with Google Gemini. Developers can use Foundation Models to build offline AI features into their apps.
By 2026, Apple expects to release a next-generation Siri, marking a milestone in its AI roadmap.
